The Praying American was a chaplain in the 2nd Ranger Battalion, the same as Captain Millers soldiers. He prayed over a dying American soldier, reciting prayers for the soldier to recite to ask for forgiveness, similar to a confession or sacrament of the sick. He later pushed into Vierville with his compatriots. Given his prayer, he was most likely a Catholic.
