The Czech Soldier was enlisted by the Nazis when they occupied Czechoslovakia. He was stationed in Normandy at Omaha Beach. When he was surrendering, he tried to tell two American soldiers that he was Czech but they shot him as they could not understand him and thought he was trying to surrender. One American insultingly claimed the Czech said, "Look! I washed for supper!"
Trivia[]
- The English translation of what the Czech says is “Please don’t shoot me! I am not German, I am Czech, I didn’t kill anyone! I am Czech!"
- The Wehrmacht and Waffen SS often conscripted foreign soldiers from occupied nations to bolster their ever dwindling numbers. In addition, all eligible men in the former Czechoslovak territory of Sudetenland were drafted into the Wehrmacht. This is likely how the Czech Soldier ended up at Omaha Beach.
