Dewindt was a Lieutenant from the 99th Troop Carrier Squadron which carried in the 327th Glider Infantry. He was the pilot of a Glider carrying Brigadier General Amend and troops of the 327th. The plane was hit by a storm, and 22 troops died. The Co-Pilot's head was blown off also. His arms were broken trying to keep the plane level. All those men died trying to protect Amend, though he died.
