Esson was a soldier in the 2nd Rangers Batallion of the United States Army during World War Two. He was part of Company C led by Captain John H. Miller. On D-Day, June 6th, 1944, Esson was deployed to Omaha Beach with Charlie Company, 2nd Rangers Battalion.

When the landing crafts came under fire from the German MG-42 in the Coastal Bunker, Esson and the other members of his company jumped over the side of their landing craft into the water. His fate is unknown but he was likely killed after he made it onto the beach.
