George C. Marshall was a general in World War Two and was the army chief of staff in the Pentagon in America. It was because of him that Captain John H. Miller and his men went searching for Private James Francis Ryan.

Before the war

Not much is known about his life before the war except that he joined the army and worked his way up the ranks until finally reaching the rank of general. Given by his age and rank, it is highly likely that he took part in the First World War and stayed in the army since.

The Ryan Brothers

Shortly after D-day he was told by his aide a Colonel that three of the Ryan brothers had been lost during the war in such a short space of time. Although they disapprove of sending a rescue squad in search for Ryan, he still wanted them to do it anyway and read them a letter to a Mrs. Bixby in Boston which was written by Abraham Lincoln (presumably during or after the civil war) sending his words of sympathy at losing her five sons. After reading the letter, it seemed he'd swayed the Colonal and Major that searching for Ryan was the right thing to do.

He also wrote a letter personally to Mrs. Margaret Ryan to inform her that James Ryan was well and returning home and wished her good health and many years of happiness and even included a short prayer in the letter to try and help sustain her with the loss of her other sons.
