Could someone add the goof about his rank? His patch identified him as E-5 but they call him a corporal. —Sergeant Blyndblitz File:Gregorface.jpg (Comlink) (Blog) (Contribs) 22:34, June 2, 2014 (UTC)
- why don't you yourself? You're more than welcome to do so :) Snivystorm (talk) 15:52, June 3, 2014 (UTC)
There's an error in wording on this page (or a bad sentence composition) here:
"During the Battle at Ramelle, he became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 calibre ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move.
He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shotSteamboat Willie for killing Miller despite the later letting Willie go out of mercy."
Shouldn't it be earlier instead of later? either that or it's a difficult sentence to understand.

Upham - was it cowardice or shell shock?[]
Shell shock (or CSE in WW2) was an actual medical condition due to inflammation of the brain from huge explosions, depending on how far you were away and the area of impact would determine the symptoms due to the brain being effected in different ways for different people, there was no fool proof cure and all they really did was put them in a hotel with a passionate nurse or woman for a few days all the while reinforcing the fact that "youre going back to the front line soldier" gee..thanks...general. So of course there was little success in treatment, they did however become adept and noticing when it happens so they could take care of it as a priority. However, there is a diffrence between Shell Shock and mental breakdowns and even frozen trauma syndrome. The three can be easily mistaken for each other due to such identical symptoms but essentially it is all caused by heavy impact and constant trauma. shell shock literally swells your brain, while the other two are caused by breaks in emotional/mental states.
That being said, i personally dont think Upham was experiencing anything other than cowardice, he was perfectly able to remain relatively calm compared to this instance with Willie, and he was completely coherent and conscious, battling with his cowardice and hating himself for it. You could see it in his eyes the disgust he had for his lack of bravery. As he should have, the other two syndromes essentially break you from reality. When youre shell shocked or FTS, you arent aware of reality/perception, rendering you inoperable. Cowardice is just chicken shit trying to justify abandoning your post. Now im not a soldier nor do i have the entitlement to judge anyone from that time and experience, im only calling it how i see it. Lets be real here, he abandoned his comrade in battle and then decided to kill willie afterwards, gee thanks asshole but you may as well have left him alive at this point, either way youre still a coward and you let your closest brother in arms die when you were literally a few feet away downstairs. That is cowardice and he should have been executed by the captain if he ever found out what really happened. too little too late upham you chicken shit bastard. RIP to DAS JUDEN!
The SS soldier in Ramelle isn't Steamboat Willie. Common misconception. Steamboat Willie was a Prussian soldier, not SS. And they're different actors.
